Chevrolet Volt – What the Auto Press Says

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt ranks 2 out of 21 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 25 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Volt, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
Car reviewers have been buzzing about the Volt ever since Chevrolet floated the idea of an extended-range electric car. With plenty of test-drives under their belts, reviewers agree that the Volt, which is the 2011 North American Car of the Year, exceeds their expectations.
Rarely have expectations been as high for a new car as they were for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Amid industry debate (“It’s an electric car!” “It’s a hybrid!” “It’s neither!”), Chevrolet rolled out the Volt. With the first test drives complete, most reviews agree with The Detroit News, who cuts through the debate and says, “I’ll simply add my 2 cents: The Volt is a great car.” Automotive journalists even went so far as to vote the Volt the 2011 North American Car of the Year.

Volt Performance – 9.5 (Excellent)
The Chevrolet Volt’s performance is what sets it apart from every other car on the market. Powered mainly by an electric motor, but with a back up gasoline engine for when its batteries are depleted, the Volt is primarily an electric car for the first 50 or so miles it is driven. Go beyond 50 miles and its gasoline engine kicks on. Performance-wise, reviewers are impressed with the first-of-its-kind powertrain. Speaking of the Volt’s dual power systems, Car and Driver says “Behind the wheel, however, it all operates seamlessly.”

Customer Review
2012 Chevrolet Volt 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)

After 7 months and 10,026 miles I have to say that the Volt bests even our beloved Prius. Over its life to date, I have used only 69.3 gallons of gasoline, or 144.6 mpg. I am getting between 42 and 48 miles of battery driving each day of my 72-mile commute. To fully charge the battery for those 42-47 miles it costs 82 cents. I am getting between 35 and 41 mpg when the internal combustion engine is recharging the battery.

Favorite Features
Fit, finish, acceleration, outstanding braking, back up camera, blue tooth, free OnStar, an iPhone app that lets me remote start and check on recharging status, heated seats, very comfortable for a person 6’4″, no rattles, sporty handling, environmentally friendly, outstanding crash rating, and just about every GM option comes standard. The grandkids love to ride in it and fight over the back bucket seats.
